Introduction
- Determine the learners’ knowledge about energy:
- Different forms / types of energy.
- How energy is transferred.
- Show Video Clip 1: Amazing Energy Facts To Blow Your Mind. (3:33)
Teacher Input 1
- Greet the learners.
- Tell them that they will learn more about potential energy in the next presentation.
- They must also complete Worksheet A while they are watching Presentation 1.
- Present an overview of energy by using Presentation 1: Energy (slide share). (1 - 7- skip slide 5).
Learner Activity 1
- Each learner completes Worksheet A while they are watching Presentation 1.
- Teacher to use Worksheet A: Memorandum to mark the learners’ work.
- They have to fill in the answers while the teacher pauses at each slide.
- Learners are asked to bring food labels to the next Science lesson. (as specified in Worksheet B or other food types that the teacher had chosen).
Teacher Input 2
- Enquire about the learners’ favourite food, chocolate, chips, vegetable, meat, etc.
- Inform the learners that it is very important to watch what we eat. Tell the learners to take out their food labels.
- Present an overview of potential energy by using Presentation 2: Potential energy.
Learner Activity 2
- Group the learners to do the following practical activities:
- Lifting a brick from the ground; keeping it at different heights; etc.
- Push a book from their desk / the teacher’s table.
- Carefully releasing an elastic band that they had stretched (aimed at the ground and not at someone / the teacher can do this activity to prevent any problems).
- Ask the learners what meat do they like to eat and how big is their portions/ servings.
- Small groups (4-5) complete Worksheet B.
- Teacher to use Worksheet B: Memorandum to mark the learners’ work.
- The groups get an opportunity to compare and discuss whether the food’s nutritional information which are manufactured by different manufacturers, are the same / differs slightly/ differs completely.
- Learners must also determine which food has the highest, least and same energy content and give reasons.
