Term 3 Topic 1 Renewable sources of energy

• Renewed Energy Song.
• Show Video clip 1: (3:27 min.).
• Greet the learners.
• Tell the learners that we cannot hold or see energy.
• Ask them why human beings need energy.

Possible answers (work; grow; move; live; lift things up; etc.)

• Inform them that nothing can happen without energy.

• Practical demonstration - choose learners to do the following:
• Switch the classroom’s light on and off.
• Throw / kick a ball to another learner.
• Move a chair or table.
• Run to the playground and return to the classroom.
• Inform them that they all needed energy to do the work.
• Show Video Clip 2: How the body obtains and uses energy (slide share. 25 slides –select appropriate slides for your learners).
  • Allow learners to discuss slide 1 briefly.
  • Dramatize / mime slide 4 (do not exceed 5 minutes).

• Find out what they can remember about renewable and non-renewable sources of energy which had been taught in grade 6.
• Ask them the following questions:
• Which appliances in their homes use electricity for their energy?
• Why do certain appliances use more energy?
• Show a few electrical appliances to the learners and ask them to explain how it is use; safety precautions; price; manufacturers; etc.
• Show Video Clip 3: Introduction to Electricity. (Only show it if the learners’ knowledge must be broadened / refreshed).(5:15 min).

The learners explain what they had watched on the video and elaborate on it

• Present an overview of renewable energy sources by using Presentation 1: Renewable Energy Sources (slide share – Slides 1-4). 

• Complete Worksheet A which is based on Presentation 1.
• Teacher to use Worksheet A: Memorandum to mark the learners’ work.

• Ask the learners why it is necessary to grow more trees.
• They can share their ideas.
• Show Video Clip 4: Trees, the renewable resource. (6  slides).
• Notify the learners that they will be asked to share their ideas and research work on the date determined by the teacher.

• Practical activity - each group must do research on: PLANNING A SCHOOL TREE PLANT      (Video Clip 5) (a good starting point)
• Group 1 (Selecting the most suitable site to plant the tree)
• Group 2 (Selecting the type of tree)
• Group 3 (Finding the money to buy the tree / approaching nurseries or people to donate the tree(s).
• Group 4 (Choosing the date to plant the tree(s)).
• Group 5 (Listing what the learners should bring on the day of planting)
• Group 6 (Maintaining the tree(s)).

• Homework: Group the learners (6-8) and tell them that they will use magazines, newspapers and the internet to find appropriate pictures about renewable resources.
• Each group must make an A3 collage and present it to the class.

• Inform the learners that they will be learning more about renewable sources.
• Present an overview of renewable resources by using Presentation 2: Renewable sources.
