Term 4 Topic 1 The Earth Moves

• Greet the learners.
• Show them a sphere (an orange or ball with a hole through the centre).
• Tell them that this shape is the same shape as planet earth.
• Ask learners to tell you everything they know about the earth.

Possible Answers: 

It has land and water; mountains; it is a sphere; it is a planet; we live on it; etc.

• Show learners the ball or orange with the hole through the centre.
• Place the pencil though the centre.
• Spin the ball slowly around the pencil.
• Explain that the earth moves in the same way around its own axis.
• Show Presentation 1.
• Ask learners to write down facts that they learned about how the earth moves.
• Show Video Clip 1 (4 mins).

• Learners will fill in missing terms on Worksheet A.
• This will demonstrate that they have understood the way the earth moves and how day and night are created.
• This will form a note for further assessment.

• In pairs, let the learners act out being the earth and the sun; the “earth” learner rotates around the “sun” learner while rotating on their own axis (swop around).
• Hint: Let learners cut out and colour in a yellow circle (the sun) and a green and blue circle (the earth). They can hold the appropriate circle as they perform Activity 2.

• Ask learners what they would see in the sky at night.

Possible Answers:

Dark; stars, moon, milky way, etc.

• Tell the learners that they will now look at a second PowerPoint on Planet Earth and the Solar System.
• Ask the learners if they can explain the word “solar” (Answer: means “sun”).

Show the Presentation 2 – learners must write down the names of the planets as they learn them in the presentation

Show Video Clip 2 (3.03 mins).

Show Video Clip 3 (4.25 mins).

This will reinforce what was learned during PowerPoint 2 presentation and discussion:

• Hand out Fact Sheet 1.
• Allow each child to read out one fact.
• Using the fact sheets learners must fill in the answers on Worksheet B.

• Hand out Quiz 1. Learners may complete this quiz in class or as homework.
