Soil Types

Different particles make up soil, that is why there are many different types of soil.
These particles are different in size, some are bigger and some smaller.

• Ask learners what they remember about soil from previous PowerPoint presentations and discussions.

Possible Answers:

Rock broken down by acids and water; rubbing against each other; gives plants minerals and water; helps plants grow, etc.

• Ask learners to describe sand at the beach and sand around their homes.

Possible Answers:

Beach = soft, white, rocky, full of shells; Home = red/grey/brown; stony, soft, sticky when wet, etc.

• Show Presentation 3.
• During the slide show, ask learners to carefully write down what soil is made of (they can make rough notes).
• At the end of the slide show, discuss what they wrote down.
• Show Video 2.

This Video explains the different types of soil and how they are formed.

• Hand out Worksheet F.

Learners must read the information and answer the questions relating to the different soil types and their properties.

• Learners must each bring a small container of soil to school.
• They must then discuss what type of soil they have brought and what properties it has.
• They must compare what it looks like wet and dry.

• Hand out Worksheet G for learners to complete as revision for this topic.
