Introduction
- Greet the learners.
- Tell the learners that they had seen the video about mixtures
- Inform them that they will learn about the physical methods that can be used to separate mixtures.
- Remind them about waste material that can be separated [covered in previous topic].
Teacher Input 1
- Find out what they can remember about recycling materials.
- Ask them the following questions:
- Is it good to recycle materials?
- Which materials can be recycled at school?
- What can be done with the recycled materials?
- In this topic the different methods will be discovered to separate mixtures.
- The teacher gives the learners different materials to separate.
Learner Activity 1
- The learners work in groups [6 – 8].
Each group gets different materials to separate, e.g. beans and rice; screws and nuts; different colour geometrical shapes; [any other suitable types of materials].
Teacher Input 2
- Ask them the following questions about the methods that are used to separate mixtures in the kitchen:
- Egg white for fridge tarts or baking.
- Different fruit for fruit salad.
- Lentils / rice / samp / sugar beans / etc. for cooking.
- Inform them that they will see examples of pure substances, liquid mixtures as well as dry substances.
- Present an overview of different mixtures by using Presentation 1: Mixtures.
Learner Activity 2
- Complete Worksheet A: Separating mixtures.
- Teacher to use Worksheet A: Memorandum to mark the learners’ work.
