Introduction
Press a pencil through an orange and show the learners how the Earth moves by turning the pencil.
Teacher Input 1
- Greet the learners.
- Ask them questions about day and night:
- From which direction does the Sun rise?
- What happens in the evening?
- How many hours are there in one day? [Calculate the daily hours spent at school; hours at school per week; etc.].
- Test their direction knowledge [north; east; west; south].
Learner Activity 1
- Group work. [encourage learners to think, reason and communicate]
- Group 1: Discuss why it seems that the houses and trees are moving while you are riding in a train/ bus/ taxi/ car.
- Group 2: Discuss why shadows appear on the ground.
- Group 3: Identify and mark the spot from which the Sun shines through the windows of the class and state the direction.
- Group 4: Four learners in the group stands and each one look in a different direction. They must establish who is looking to the east; west; north and south.
- Each group reports back.
Teacher Input 2
- Thank the learners for their good participation.
- Show Video Clip 1: Earth’s orbit song. [4:33 min.].
- Present an overview of the Earth’s movement by using Presentation 1: Movements of the Earth and Planets – Rotation and Revolution [part 1].

- Show Video Clip 2: How the Earth Orbits the Sun [4:05 min.].
- This will help the learners to understand that the Sun is stationery and that the Earth is actually turning around the Sun.

- A short discussion to explain how the Earth moves around the Sun.
- Practical group demonstrations can follow. [Learners can improvise].
- A small incentive can be given to the best interpretation of the Earth’s movement around the Sun.
