Combining Materials

• Materials can be processed to make new materials or products such as:
  • Mixing and setting (e.g. plaster of Paris or polyfilla and water to make plaster).
  • Mixing and setting (e.g. sand, gravel, cement and water to make concrete).
  • Mixing and cooking (e.g. making dough).
  • Mixing and cooling (e.g. jelly powder and water to make jelly).
  • Mixing and drying/firing (e.g. wet clay and straw to make clay bricks).
• The properties of the new materials/products may be different to the those of the original materials.

• Before the lesson starts, the teacher will need to:
  • Watch the video clip on Making Glue (link provided below).
  • Set up all ingredients.
  • Prepare a poster board with heading: PROCESSED MATERIALS.
  • Prepare pictures of processed materials for learners to glue to the poster board (e.g. jelly, cake, clay bowl, etc.).

• Greet learners.
• Make the glue in front of them, explaining each step.

• Allow learners to use the glue to paste pictures of processed materials on the poster board.
• Ask learners to look at each picture and try to list what was combined to make each one.

• Show Presentation 1.
• Show Video Clip 1 (1:38 minutes).

This video shows us how to make new material from existing material. It shows us how to make glue that is non-toxic & eco-friendly.

• Show Video Clip 2 (4:43 minutes).

The video shows how easy it is to make your own shower gel or liquid soap from a bar of soap.

• Show Video Clip 3 (7:02 minutes) .

The video shows the steps taken to make a clay pot.

This activity is designed to give learners the opportunity to show that they can work in a group, give instructions, and demonstrate that they understand how products are processed.

• Divide learners into groups of 4.
• Each group must choose one process – Making Jelly; Making Glue; Making a Clay Pot; Making Cement; etc. – and prepare an oral presentation on this process.
• Groups must have clear instructions and pictures in their presentations (drawn or printed).
• Learners will find guidelines for this task from THUNDERBOLT KIDS pg 76 – 193 .
• Groups will then present their demonstrations to the class.
• After each demonstration, learners will create a flow chart on how the processed material was made (example from THUNDERBOLT KIDS pg 173).

• Give feedback on the Group oral presentations.
• Hand out Worksheet A and ask learners to complete it.
• Hand out Worksheet B.
• Using the example of pineapple jelly, explain to learners how to fill in the worksheet.
• Learners must fill in answers using their vocabulary list.

• Learners complete Quiz 1.

• Learners complete Quiz 2 in class or as homework.
