Inter-dependence

• plants and animals depend on each other.
• plants and animals depend on the following available resources in their own habitats:
  • air.
  • water.
  • soil.
  • food.
  • places to hide.

• Ask the learners to explain what the word “dependence” means.
• They must also give examples.
• The learners get one minute to discuss in pairs whether they are connected to plants and animals [learners’ understanding and pre-knowledge can be determined].
• Trigger the learners’ minds by asking them if we can live without water or food. [mention floods and droughts to intensify the learners’ response].
• Show Video Clip 3 (1,33 minutes).  

In this video clip the learners see that all plants and animals depend on each other for the things they need to stay alive.

• Tell the learners that they will look at Presentation 2 after which the groups will get an opportunity to discuss the content and report back.

• The groups discuss what they had seen in Presentation 2.
• Each group gets an opportunity to report back [interdependence in an ecosystem -between non-living and living things; between plants and animals].
• The following interdependence aspects should be included:
  • Seed dispersal.
  • Pollination.
  • Feeding.

• Learners complete Quiz 2.

• Show Video Clip 4 (5,27 minutes) and learners sing and dance along with the song.
