Properties & Uses

• Materials can be either raw or processed (raw) material. Raw materials, are material which have not yet been processed. Raw materials are in their natural form (the form in which they are found in nature). Natural materials can come from plants, animals or the ground.
• Processed material are those which have been tampered-with/refined or changed by humans from their natural form. Examples include paper, steel and glass.

• Hint: Plan a visit to a processing factory – e.g. the Hinterveld factory tour (PE Wool & Mohair) or visit a clay potter (NMMU Art Department).

• Greet learners.

• Ask learners to explain what processing is and give examples of processed materials.

Possible Answers:

Blanket, pot, cement, plastic, glass, paint.

• Show learners some processed products e.g. traditional clay pots, woven baskets, plastic bottles, wool, tin cans, etc.
• Ask learners how they think the objects started out.

Possible Answers:

Clay pots fro clay; baskets from plants; plastic from oil; cans from aluminium or tin; wool from sheep, etc.
