Introduction
- Vertebrate animals are able to move because there are:
- Muscles attached to their skeletons.
- Joints between their bones.
Teacher Input 5
- Inform the learners that they had learnt a lot about the different bones.
- Now they will learn that movement for the animals are made possible by using their joints, muscles and bones.
- Revise :
- skeletons → support and shape → animals’ bodies.
- skeletons → protect → fragile body tissues and internal organs (brain; eyes; lungs; heart; kidneys and spinal cord).
Explain: if the learners mention that it is protected by the skeleton:
- skull (cranium) protects the brain and eyes.
- the ribs protect the heart, kidneys and lungs.
- the vertebrae (spine, backbones) protect the spinal cord.
- Show Presentation 3.
Learner Activity 1
- For fun and as a practical exercise divide the class into 6 groups.
- Play a different song (popular kwaito, hip hop; opera, country, line dancing, pansula, gospel, Kaapse Klopse etc.) for one minute to each group.
- Explain that each group will get a turn to dance to their particular song for one minute. (Encourage learners to move to the beat of the music and to use their different body parts) while the other groups observe.
- After each group had danced they can report back on the body parts that they swung; shook; swayed, jiggled; nodded; lifted; etc.
- This will integrate perfectly with the following subjects: Language (verbs); Life Skills (traditions of different cultures); Physical Education (dancing).
Teacher Input 6
- Tell the learners that they will complete a revision exercise after they had seen Presentation 4.
- Go through the slide with the learners.
Learner Activity 2
- Learners complete Quiz 1.
Learner Activity 3
- Explain to learners how to do research for the information they will need for Worksheet D – i.e. the school library; Google, etc.
- Hand out Worksheet E and ask learners to complete it.
- Completion of this worksheet will be challenging and the use thereof is optional.
