Term 2 Topic 1 Properties of metals

• Metals are shiny, hard, strong, can be hammered (malleable), and made into thin wires without breaking (ductile), can be melted at high temperatures.
• Metals are mined from the earth.
• Metals are usually hard and can be heavy.
• Particles of metals are packed close together and this is what makes them dense.
• Metals conduct electricity and heat.

• Greet the learners.
• Place your metals objects in one container and non-metals in another container.
• Shake the up and ask learners to tell you what they think each container has inside it.

• Take the objects out of each container and place them so learners can see them.
• Ask learners to describe and name the objects from the containers.
• Ask them to list the properties they observe in the metals and non-metals.

Possible Answers:

shiny, rusty, hard, strong, noisy, dusty, bendy, breakable, dull, etc.

• Show Presentation 1.
• Discuss the properties and examples of each.

• Show Video Clip 1 (5:34 minutes).

The video shows physical properties of metals and non-metals in detail.

• Collect different metals that you find on the school grounds, at home, in the street, etc.
• Let learners feel, touch, smell etc. the metals.
• Place some metals in a small glass of Coke.
• Learners must discuss what they observe.
