Term 3 Topic 3 Conduction

• Ask the learners what influence the four different seasons have on them.
  • Health
  • Clothing
  • Food
  • Sport

• Greet the learners
• Discuss precautions when working with electric stoves, candles, gas stoves, etc.
  • dry hands when working with electrical appliances;
  • do not place a candle near an open window;
  • watch out for gas leaks, etc.
• Present an overview of heating as a transfer of energy by using Presentation 1: Heating as a transfer of energy.

• Tell the learners to listen attentively to the video clip of the rap song.
• Show Video clip 1 Conduction, Convection, and Radiation (SONG!). (3:53 min.).

• Present an overview of conduction by using Presentation 2: Conduction
• Show Video Clip 2: Conduction of heat - Elementary Science (2:24 min.).
• Ask the learners what is very important about:
  • The objects (both objects must touch each other).
  • The temperature (there must be a difference between the temperature of the two objects).

• Learners complete Worksheet A: Conduction
• Teacher to use WORKSHEET A: Memorandum to mark the learners’ work.

• Find out from the learners if they eat the same kind of food every day (at home/ on their birthdays/ in restaurants/ at weddings/etc. (Be sensitive because some do not have the luxury to be invited to parties/restaurants/ etc.).

Or

• Ask them what they would prefer to eat daily at home / when they visit a restaurant, etc. (Show them a restaurant menu).
• Inform them that you have established that they prefer a variety of different foods.
• Now they can look at the next presentation in which different variables are used in experiments.
• Present an overview of variables by using Presentation 3: What are variables?
• The class can be divided into boys and girls:
  • Let them debate about a science topic (e.g. Which liquid cools down faster: coffee / tea / milo / hot chocolate?)
  • It can be practically done and monitored to prove whose hypothesis was correct.
